Hall of Fame -- 1997 inductees

William Goertz

Mr. Goertz dedicated over 40 years of service to the credit union system including serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Niagara Credit Union from 1955 to 1993. During his tenure as CEO of Niagara Credit Union, membership grew from 957 to more than 63,000 members while assets increased from $336,000 to over $650 million.

Mr. Goertz was a director of the Ontario Co-operative Credit Society, prior to its merger with the Ontario Credit Union League in 1973. From 1987 to 1993 he served as a Director of Credit Union Central of Ontario and served on various committees of that organization. From 1987 to 1990 he was also a Director of Credit Union Central of Canada where he served on the Audit Committee.

Following his retirement from Niagara Credit Union in 1993 he worked on a British Commonwealth Secretariat project conducting an operational review and analysis of B.I.U. Credit Union until 1995.

Angus McKinnon

Mr. McKinnon dedicated over 50 years of volunteer service with Alberta's credit unions. He helped found a number of credit unions beginning in 1944 with Bridgeland Savings & Credit Union, A&W Savings and Credit Union and CalOil Savings and Credit Union. In the early years, business was conducted from Mr. McKinnon's own private garage, where members' savings were kept in a safe purchased from the Canadian Pacific Railway. He served as president of Bridgeland Savings & Credit Union in its last 12 years before amalgamating to form First Calgary Savings & Credit Union where he continues to serve as an active Board member.

Mr. McKinnon assisted in the formation of the Credit Union League of Alberta in 1942 and the Alberta Central Credit Union Ltd. When these two organizations amalgamated in 1967 he was an original member of the Board and served as President for six years. He served terms on the Executive Committee including vice president, treasurer, chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee, the Credit Committee and Legal and Legislative Committee. He served as a delegate to Credit Union Central of Canada and to the U.S. International Credit Union movement. He was a member of the Founders Club of CUNA International.

In 1972 he was made an honourary member of the Board of Directors, Montana State League, in recognition of his leadership role between U.S. and Canadian credit unions.

George Viereck

Mr. Viereck dedicated over 40 years of service to the credit union system including serving as the General Manager of Prince Rupert Fishermen's and Kaien Consumers Credit Union from 1946 to his retirement in 1980.

Mr. Viereck was a director and Chairman of the Cooperators Group for 36 years, director of the B.C. Credit Union League, and Credit Union Central of B.C., Canadian director of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), director of Credit Union Central of Canada and Director and Chairman of Northern Savings Credit Union from 1989 until his death in 1994.

Mr. Viereck travelled the length of B.C. in the late 1930s and 1940s promoting the establishment of credit unions and producer and consumer cooperatives in remote fishing and logging villages. He maintained those cooperative principles throughout his life.
