Hall of Fame -- 2000 Inductees

Dr. Ian MacPherson

Dr. MacPherson has, over the past twenty years, promoted understanding and advancement of credit unions and co-operatives through his several books and articles exploring their unique history. He has authored histories of the International Credit Union Movement and WOCCU, B.C. Central and the British Columbia credit union movement, the Co-operative Union of Canada, Co-operative Trust Company of Canada, and A. Rod Glen, a British Columbia credit union and co-operative pioneer.

In addition to his research and writing interests, Dr. MacPherson has assumed several positions of leadership, as a volunteer with the movement. He has served on eight Boards of Directors, including those of Credit Union Central of British Columbia, Credit Union Central of Canada, and Pacific Coast Saving Credit Union, serving as Chairperson of four of these Boards.

In addition, he was the founding president of the Canadian Co-operative Association and served for three years on the Board of Governors of the Co-operative College of Canada. He has represented Canadian co-operatives and their 12 million members at meetings of the International Co-operative Alliance, and he chaired the committee that reviewed and prepared a re-statement of the co-operative principles for their Congress held in 1995.

W. Trevor Shepstone

Mr. Shepstone began his credit union career in 1977 when he was elected to the Board of Saskatoon Credit Union where, over the next 16 years, he served as a director, second vice-president and then president as well as having the distinction of having served on every committee of Saskatoon Credit Union's Board.

He also served on the Board of Credit Union Central of Saskatchewan, again as director, second and first vice-president and then president. At the national level, Mr. Shepstone served on the Boards of the Canadian Co-operative Credit Society (now Credit Union Central of Canada), Co-operative Trust Company of Canada, CUETS, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and the Co-operative Securities Board.

In addition to his busy agenda of co-operative sector directorships, Trevor Shepstone was also involved for close to 40 years with St. John Ambulance where, in May 1997, he was elevated to the rank of Knight of St. John, an honour accorded to few.
