Al Charbonneau

Nominated By Credit Union Central of Ontario, Mississauga, Ontario

Mr. Charbonneau began his career in 1959 when he was named general manager of the Saskatchewan Credit Union League. It was a big step in a credit union career that would end with his retirement as chief executive officer of the World Council of Credit Unions in 1993.

While at the Saskatchewan League and later, the Michigan Credit Union League, he spearheaded fund-raising efforts to establish support programs and one-on-one relationships between his league and credit unions in developing nations. As assistant managing director of CUNA International, he helped with the promotion of credit unions in Africa.

Mr. Charbonneau was also a managing director of the Michigan Credit Union League, where he served as chairman of CUNA's World Extension Committee. From Michigan, he went on to become CEO of Credit Union Central of Ontario and during that time served on the boards of Credit Union Central of Canada and WOCCU.
