Peter Mykulak

Nominated By Buduchnist Credit Union, Toronto, Ontario

Mr. Mykulak was past President of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada and First Vice-President of the World Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions. Throughout his lengthy career Peter made significant contributions to the Canadian and Ukrainian credit union movements, until his untimely death in November 2000.

Inspired by the cooperative spirit, he played a leading role in the founding and growth of Buduchnist Credit Union. After 39 consecutive years of dedicated service in the positions of Treasurer, Vice-President, and member of the Executive Committee, he resigned to play a more active role. In 1989 he was elected as President of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada, where he initiated the first meeting of common interest groups to reintroduce the idea of credit unions, which hadn't existed since the 1920s.

Mr. Mykulak returned to the Ukraine in 1991 to spearhead the birth of the cooperative credit union movement following the fall of the Soviet Union. By 1999, 103 credit unions were registered throughout all regions of the Ukraine.
