Dr. J. D. Nelson MacDonald was a great friend to Nova Scotia’s credit unions right up until the time of his death in 1988. He was an active participant on the Board of Directors of Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia, a role he played from the time CUCNS was formed in 1938. Dr. MacDonald became Vice-President of the Credit Union National Association in 1941, later becoming a Director of the Credit Union Association Supply Co-operative. From there, he went on to become Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and finally President of CUMIS, based in Madison, Wisconsin. His leadership in organizing co-operatives is legendary throughout North America.
