Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia has posted a fraud warning regarding phone calls made to a credit union’s members and some non-members in the community. The caller advised that there had been “unauthorized use” of the credit union debit card. The caller then requested that the debit card number be keyed in using the telephone pad. Three pieces of additional identification were also requested.
One of the calls was traced to Puerto Rico. There have also been newspaper reports of this scam being run in various parts of the U.S.
The RCMP in Nova Scotia has been notified and an investigation is underway.
Credit Union Central of Canada reminds everyone that your credit union would never call and request this type of information. One should never give out this type of personal information over the phone. Credit unions should regularly remind their members of this type of scam.
