National Young Leaders Committee

connect. communicate. co-operate.

The overall purpose of the National Young Leaders Committee is to be a voice, influence change and drive forward talent management of young leaders within and across the Canadian Credit Union system. The role of the National Young Leaders (NYL) committee is to make recommendations, advocate, increase awareness, and deliver programs to support talent management within the system.

The committee formed in 2006 when past nominees of the Canadian National Young Leaders Award approached Canadian Central with an idea to increase capacity and mentoring opportunities for young leaders in the system. The Task Force is made up of the five annual nominees from the Canadian Central NYL award and other young credit union professionals who were recruited to ensure regional representation. Each year five new NYL award nominees join the committee, and five previous nominees complete their term.

Mandate: The National Young Leaders Committee will investigate and develop project plans to implement the recommendations outlined in their National Young Leaders Task Force Strategy Report (approved by Credit Union Central of Canada Board of Directors in June 2006).

2010 "Be The Voice" Contest

Credit union employees under 40 are invited to enter the National Young Leaders’ Committee “Be the Voice” contest. Contestants must respond in essay or video form to present the next “big idea” for the credit union system. This year’s theme deals with innovation. Historically, credit unions have been innovators in banking, both in terms of technological advancement (they were the first to offer ATMs and online banking) and societal advancement (they were the first to offer loans to women in their own name). So, what is the next innovation in banking that credit unions can drive? Answer this question in a 1000 word essay or a 3-5 minute video clip and send it to tara.mckeown@affinitycu.ca by June 15, 2010.  The winner will receive a CUCC conference registration for the 2011  National Conference and $1,500 toward traveling costs and accommodations to attend the conference.

2009 "Be The Voice" Contest Winner

Jordan Moat, Business Development Manager at Ontario-based Hamilton Community Credit Union, has been named the winner of the "Be the Voice" Big Idea contest.  Early in 2009 the National Young Leaders Committee challenged credit union leaders under 40, to submit their best strategic idea for the Canadian Credit Union System, and Moat's submission was selected as the over-all top choice by his peers across Canada, who voted on-line.
